Frequently Asked Questions
How long have you been writing? I've been writing for as long as I can remember. After getting into trouble for writing in books or on walls, my parents gave me paper and a writing instrument. I was in heaven. Blank pages to fill up. Words that could bring smiles or tears to the faces of those who read your work.
When did you get serious about your writing? My mother encouraged me to use my talent to write larger stories and to seek publication. After her death in August of 2000, I promised myself I would look at my gift of writing with the idea of publication.
Where do you get your ideas? I have no problem with ideas. There are more ideas in my head than I will ever be able to write about. I see a person on the street and imagine what their life might be like and my imagination takes off from there. I read something in the newspaper that causes me to ask that magic question, "What if?" And I'm off in another world constructing a story. I wake up from a dream and know that parts of it would make a great story. Ideas are everywhere. You just have to be receptive to them.
What's your favorite type of book to read? I love a good romance. If there is humor in it so much the better. I also love mysteries and suspense. I read everything from mainstream to literary fiction.
Why do you like romance stories? Because I love a happy ending. Too often in life there isn't a happily ever after. When I read I like the satisfaction of knowing the characters are going to be okay and that good triumphs over evil.
Do any of your characters represent people you know? No. I make up all of my characters. However, I do study people and their voices, mannerisms, quirks, and descriptions. I take things from one and add something from another and pretty soon I have a composite figure. Sometimes a face will come to me in a dream or I'll hear a voice in my head. Then I know I have to find a story for that person.
Why are most of your heroes law enforcement officials? Law enforcement officials to me represent the best of the best. It goes back to that thing I have of needing good to win out over bad. It's as simple as that. To make my books more realistic I'm currently enrolled in a twelve week Citizens Police Academy. It's been a real eye-opener and has given me a new appreciation of the men and women in blue. And it's given me a great idea for a series of books. The writer's mind is never at rest.
What is your goal as a writer? To bring characters to life on the page. To entertain the reader as I tell a compelling story. And to made the reader want to cheer for the good guys.
What's your favorite book? I think my all time favorite book is Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind". Not only does the story keep me interested, but I'm fascinated by the characters. From the spoiled and tenacious Scarlett to the good and true Melanie, the characters compel me to read. It's the ultimate for contrast between good and evil in characters, and yet we as the reader come away admiring Scarlett. Now that's a story.
